Went out on the South Fork near Placerville last week exploring and checking access. Found great swimming holes, a waterfall, and some great fishing. Caught mainly 8"-12" Rainbows and Browns in the morning on a mix of dries and wets before seeing this guy cruising a big pool. Took a half dozen fly changes, but he finally settled on a scud and I had 25" of Brown in hand. I had brought my 4wt, so the fight was pretty exciting and he had me into the backing more than once. There are quite a few nice pools in there, you just have to be willing to swim, crawl, and climb your way to them.

Awesome! I plan on heading up with the wife for july. Never been to the south fork but want to definitely do some hiking and exploring mostly untouched water. Anyone have any info on where to start of a book/map?

Great looking fish, was it in the hole below the falls or up by the foot bridge and did you see any rattlers, their pretty thick down there

Fished the South Fork American last Sunday morning and caught two 10" fish (one rainbow, one brown) on medium-sized brown Pat's Rubberlegs. According to someone who was leaving when we went in, the flows were up a foot over the previous weekend and may have contributed to slower fishing.

It was below the falls. I did see some nice fish in the pool underneath the foot bridge but didn't try for them.
