Do you guys know if there are any good fly fishing waters in Orange county? I'm heading down there pretty soon and thought I would check with you guys first.

Cheers,

Orange County beaches fish well during tidal movement. Identifying/locating structure/currents is part of the job. If you can, get a good map of the OC coast that'll give you an idea of access points. Lots more to this.

Check out Fliflicker (a SoCal Forum for surf fly fishing) for some info at:

Also, check out Gary Bulla's Forum (also a SoCal Forum) at:

Finally,.... A fly shop that I like down there is Bob Marriott's on Orangethorpe.

Good luck down there....

Take the ferry over from Balboa Island to the Fun Zone and rent a skiff first thing in the morning (open at 6:00am I think). Check tide for early morning and fish the Canal between Little Balboa Island and Irvine Terrace. Kelp Bass galore with occasional Corbina, Perch, etc... Large Clousers or any baitfish pattern will get you action. By 10:00am boat traffic in Newport Bay starts to get heavy. Can also try the rockwall on the South Jetty.

Newport Bay and San Diego Bay is where I fish when I head back to my old stomping grounds. In Newport Bay you can launch from the Coast Guard station, there is a parking area right next to the beach. I use size 2 clousers and float tube around the boats and the bay. Boat traffic is not an issue if you fish around the anchored boats. In San Diego I launch from Golietta Park, a great free place to launch with plenty of fish to catch. The beach in Newport will get you plenty of cation as well. Fish around the jetties and just walk up and down the beach.
