I have owned a Walton cane rod in this exact configuration - fantastic rod. One of the best casting rods I've ever owned. With a Rio Gold 5wt it was just superb. I just also happen to have an 8' 2 piece that is just as good if not slightly better so I sold it. The guy I sold it to paired it with a 5wt Gold too and immediately thanked me for selling him the best rod he'd ever cast. Do you know what the wrap color(s) and reel seat look like?

If it cast a WF5F then it would be very desirable.

I think it is near red and the reel seat is the Powell all aluminum in clear/silver.

What is it worth in almost new condition?

If it was an EC Powell it would be worth many thousands of dollars.

Unfortunately EC did not make many shorter (under 9') rods. There are a few out there. I do think the general impression of EC Powell rod values is a little inflated these days. I've sold a number of them in the last few years and they are not fetching the prices they did around 2005 - by about 40 to 50%. I do think your buddy's asking price is about right for a forum sale on this Walton - just have to find the right buyer.
