For several years now, I've been using a messenger bag in combination with a FishPond rod carrier. The messenger bag has a lot of open space plus smaller compartments. The rod carrier has enough room for 4-5, 4 pc rods plus my reel frames. Lots of zipper compartments inside and out, also. The size of the compartments is adjustable to create more or less room. Haven't had any problems placing the rod carrier in airline overhead storage.

I have a Simms Headwaters bag. I can get 5-6 fly boxes a few reels, tippet, leaders, indicators, and all the other crapola you need for a fishing trip, in there.

Been using the Orvis rod case, 6 salt water rods w/ reels. It's been out of the country several times w/o issue. last year, due to a crowded flight, an attendant asked if she could check it. When I advised her of the contents (and value) she quickly changed her mind.

gear in smaller Northface expedition pack; rods in square Abel carrier that costs a mint and aren't made anymore (new company called "Steve Abel" may reintroduce them this year).

(Obvious hint: no aluminum rod tubes)
