Ono season is on in Hilo. We went out yesterday and got 5 largest was 50lbs. All caught trolling. We hit a buoy and got a bunch of small ahi on the 12wt and some poppers. Got a cool video on the gopro.

Bloody decks, they look cool right out of the water. Can't wait to get down to baja, but right now Hawaii is going off. Mems.

Way to go Don. Ono is ono. I'm going to be there next month and want to try for one on a fly if possible. I've taken them on lures, jets, and purple rapala's but not on a fly YET :)
Aloha, Tony

Hey Tony, where are you staying? In Kona they like to troll the 70 fathom ledge down south. You can troll a fly on a fly rod, but it is tough, and you better hang on, on the first hit. We had some jumping like kingfish down on the lures. We got them trolling flies in Christmas Island. I have gotten them on the fly on a cargo net and out at an illegal buoy on the Hilo side. You have never seen line peel from your reel like that on any other fish. Keep your knuckles away from the handle or it will be murder. They generally make two long runs, and then they are spent. Good luck when you are here.
Darian you are right they are very striking right out of the ocean, kinda like mahi. Their tiger stripes make them the hardest fish to see from the top. When you are diving, you can see them from the side much more easily. They are good tasting, ono means sweet and they are wonderful so many ways. I am going back out on wednesday. Get it while you can, Don.

Wow! What a haul Don! That one in the bottom of the boat is lit up! The ono must be super abundant in those waters, whenever Im in the islands, all the restaurants serving fish & chips are using Ono. Delicious!!
