Just returned from Kauai with some great local wood! Ive got two small batches of koa. The first was dry and ready to mill, which I have here. It is the less figured, slightly more "budget" Koa... If there is such a thing. My other batch was purchased wet (28% MC) Ive got to get it down to under 10% to work with. This could take months. But this wood is exhibition grade, figured Koa! If youre willing to wait and privy to airing out your wallet on the finest wood known to man, this second batch is for you ;) No guarantees tho as I took a big risk paying this kind of money for wet wood and praying it doesn't crack during the drying process.

If you've never seen Koa, nothing, and I mean NOTHING glows like Koa wood. Its wooden gold, it really is!

Anyway, on to what I have!

If you have questions or wish to purchase one of these boxes, please contact me at flygrain@gmail.com

These first two are twins. 3x5" Koa. $70 ea. $125 for the pair.

I was desperate to find some Monkey Pod. Not easy. I ended up finding a guy selling Monkey pod cutting boards at a craft fair. I bought one and repurposed it into a fly box. This baby is spectacular! The color and flash in the grain with the cream sap wood is sooooo nice! I put my highest grade cork in this one that I reserve for my very best boxes.

3x5" Monkey Pod $85

This one is $50

The engravings of the turtles and the islands are wonderful. Looking forward to seeing what the curly stuff looks like.

I used to do a lot of carving making name signs and addresses for homes. We also went to Kona a lot as well. Just south of Kailua in Kealakekua I found a small mill that had rough sawn Koa and brought several pieces home for later work. STOP

I had to stop writing this and go climb around and dig through a few duffel bags and I found it. Koa! It's at least thirty years old and I've still got a couple of pieces, and I even found a slice of an old Myrtle burl that I cut about the same age.

I've been saving this stuff forever waiting for a project to use it on. No, I have no intention of making wooden fly boxes. I just wanted to tell you that I appreciate fine wood and really have been envious of your fine wood boxes. Your work makes me want to do something with this stuff too.

Tony, I bought a small piece about 5 years ago probably at the same place. I sent it to Jay and he made boxes. Phil

Nice, I do like koa and monkeypod. I have a koa reel seat on my bamboo rod, looks like tiger's eye and changes colors as you move it in the sunlight. I might have to get a fly box for trout fishing. Mems.

I am almost complete with my new koa wood fish net. Only the handle is koa wood, just need to finish the hand engraving on the handle, then sand, seal and put on the net.
