Hi guys,
A buddy and I are planning a trip to New Orleans in September. We were thinking of going down there a couple of days before the wives and getting in a couple of days of chasing redfish. This would be our first time fishing down there, so I had a couple of questions that I was hoping someone here might be able to answer.
Is the fishing any good at that time of year? Can anyone recommend a good guide within a couple of hours of New Orleans?
Thanks a lot,
Patrick

If you type Redfish into the Advanced Search box at the above/right side of this one, you'll get a list of past posts that contain several posts about fishing Redfish in NOLA. Look for those by Tony Buzolich, FISHEYE plus others. Lots of info in them.

I'm sure Tony, Phil and others that have been down there will post some additional info as well.

Aloha Pat, try uptown anglers, they can book a guide for you. Reds are around all year, big bulls are best in fall, so you are a little early. Still hurricane season and expect some days to be cancelled on account of weather. That being said, you can usually find cover in the marsh. Bring some bluewater gear and run offshore for big ahi and ono and AJ's on the rigs and midnight lump. Lots to fish for in the sportsman's paradise. Plus lots of great grinds in the city.

Patrick,

By all means get ahold of Capt. Greg Moon. or Rocky Thickston (his partner). I first got acquainted with Moon through Uptown Anglers but every year since have booked him direct. Greg's website is "Louisiana Fly Fishing Charters" and you can get tons of information. Rocky is great too and grew up in the area so he knows it well. Sept., Oct., and Nov., would be my first choice of times to go,,,,,, which I have. The only concern about Sept. is the chance of hurricanes, but that's just like fishing.

We stayed in New Orleans proper and Greg picked us up every morning at our hotel. We would then stop for breakfast at Penny's along with all the other local guides and got acclimated real quick to good old boy mentality. Greg is all professional though and you won't be sorry you used him.

This year I was able to convince Dan Blanton to try Capt. Moon as well for his first trip there and I believe he's booked him for the first week of Oct.

Definitely search some of my previous posts about fishing redfish there for a full story and lots of pictures. If you need more help or have questions you can call or write me anytime.

Have fun, Tony
(p/s) you've got to take your wives to dinner at Deanie's in the French Quarter

There are plenty of excellent guides down that way. I fish with Capt. Rich Waldner at fishwithrich.com Sept is a little early for the big bulls but like Mems said, there are always fish around.
