Bill, not to contradict, because you have ears everywhere, but it doesn't look like that right now.......I wish.
Up here we're already seeing springs that always run.....dry up.
Water levels look like mid-June right now.
No muddy flood melt this May, clear and low is the word.
I do not think small streams will be fish-able in July.
Lakes are too low to be providing tailwaters all Summer.
By July, the T will be warm, low and and tough.
Delay, and you may miss out.......the fishing is good now!
Just my take.

This is my third drought in CA.....I get serious about it.
Fishing when it's good, is the best course. Instead of wishing later.....
Right now it's about as good as it will get.
You're probably correct about Mid level streams for a while. Till early June....
But the top of the water-shed is scary.
Small streams are open and perfect.
Everything is about 4-6weeks ahead of schedule......
Holler if you come up.

Bill----I concur with BigFly's assessment for this season's fly fishing prospects in the Truckee area. Definitively, it will be an "early" season; May will fish like June and June will fish like July. We may see the start of the "dog days" as early as the 4th of July! There is no telling as to what the conditions will be during the "second season" (Fall). I too have made several observations of current water conditions, which reinforces BF's assessment.

Actually, early-on in my blog (www.flyfishingcalifornia.blogspot.com) I've made similar observations. Check-out my posts on 1/27/14 (The Dreaded "D" Word) and the 3/9/2014 post (A Reeealy Early Fly Fishing Report...Seasonal Prognosis Report)

Earlier-than-normal conditions are one reason why Jon Biaocchi and I have scheduled our Native Sons Tours for June 8 and are seriously considering moving our second Truckee tour into late June in lieu of mid-July.

There are many different areas that will fish very well through the spring and summer season.
Just go up in elevation as the season progresses in the Sierras. The Truckee & the Little Truckee are not the only game in town .
Doing some home work may pay off in the long run.

Retro, I'd bet between Frank and I, we're close to a 100 years of homework. Literally.....
OK, after counting on my fingers...... 90, and that's mostly Frank.....
Seriously....I love water all over the Sierra....little and big.
But, a guide permit is good for limited areas.
So we are advising only if you do want to fish this water, guided or otherwise.
Normally, going high takes place in July/August/Sept.
This year.....I've already started...... we are on the crest after all, and can't go much higher..
Fish like you mean it this year.
You never know....there may be no next year........
The main point..it's good now.
