Aloha, I get to fish montana on a frequent basis, cause my mother lives on the bitterroot. I found that the best dry fly to have is a purple haze. Sure when other stuff like skwalas are hatching those are good flies, but for every day fishing the purple haze is awesome. Does that fly work on trout in other areas? I was talking to Jesse at Rainy's flies and he fishes the Logan, Green and other Utah streams and says the fly works there as well. It has worked for me in wyoming as well, cutts especially like it. It would seem to me to be a good pattern in most western streams. Have any of you ever fished the purple haze in Cali? Just wondering, Mems.

My best days with this pattern were on the snake river in Jackson hole, big stupid Cutty's cant resist the color purple. in Montana i used it as a prospecting pattern for Brookies in the small creeks and drainage's around the Kalispell/Libby area. It always produced at least a little guy. I've had some success on the upper middle fork of the American and on the Stanislaus with it, but i still mainly use it as a search pattern. its fun to tie up in different colors to.

Cal Bird tyed something like that for the Truckee in the 70s and called it his "Yogurt." Its a little more plum colored then straight purple, but similar idea. He also had a pattern a lot like the copper john and a bunch of other modern patterns that have recently been invented. I have a bunch of Cals flies I'm photographing for a possible article, I'll post some pics of the Yogurt if I get the chance.

I've caught a lot of brookies in the Sierras using that pattern but where I fish for them they will hit anything.

The only time I've ever fish the purple haze is when I visit Missoula, MT. Never buy enough to take back and try in California. It's funny how popular that pattern is in Montana.

I wonder if any water will be there this year, last year was horribly low.

I'd go early this year. By the June, it will probably be only a trickle up there.

I've always liked purple. A purple woolly bugger looks like an alive black in the water (to me anyway). I dye alot of feathers so I took this dry one step further. Tail, body, hackle, thread, are all vivid purple. I use a white wing. It has done very well for me, but these creek fish will hit almost anything. Why call it a purple haze if only the body is purple. I say, make the whole thing purple and then its a purple haze. Anybody know where I can get a purple trout hook?

It's funny how regionalized many good flies are. Without a doubt, the best day of fishing I've ever had on The Upper Sac was with a Purple Haze two years ago. The fish were all over it. I switched out to an Adams, same profile, different color, and the action slowed. Threw the Purple Haze on and the fish starting slamming it again. Since then, I've also had good action with it on the Truckee.

We took some Dark Lords and Hogan's S & M's back to Montana a couple of years ago, and the guides had never heard of, or seen them before?!!!!
