In the fishing tackle business for about 50 years I met lots of older local fly fishers.

A group of them started the CFFU back then.

One interesting man was retired Colonel Joe Grey.

He wrote a little paperback book, "Fly Fishing for Trout and Steelhead" that my parents had bought me at a local sports show.

I ran into him for many years as I believe he was retired USAF and spent most of his retired life in Sacramento.

He was good friends with Nor Cal guide Gary Warren. Later on both moved to Oregon.

I think Colonel Joe fished the Lower Umpqua River for Smallmouth Bass late in his life.

The colonel had many great stories of fly fishing around the world as he was in the USAF.

I think he mentioned that he landed over 100 pounds worth of Atlantic Salmon on a fly in one day somewhere in Europe.

He fished the Lower American River a lot and also found many arrow heads while out there. He gave me a few.

He also fished bass and blue gill on Wagell's Pond out off the Jackson Hwy.

Later in life he found a love affair with Great Bear Lake where he caught Lake Trout and very large Grayling on flies.

My first fly tying class was with Joe Grey when I was 18 years old...just few years ago. The class was in the basement of the YWCA.
