Photos of lots of mud motors:

The natives used the classic long, straight ones on their dug out canoes while we were in the Amazon jungle.

The new 90 degree ones look interesting.

i wanted something that handles like a outboard , yet gets me into the really shallow stuff . costing me around 800 or so to build mine . including buying a vice , welder , grinder , cut off saw , metal , bearings and prop and motor . The motor is a 15 HP horizontal shaft Lifan motor .

I think that a Jon boat with one of these mud motors would allow us to get back into some really remote small water.

almost finished the motor mount . the plates on the side will have a slot and be bolted to the side of the belt drive housing .

. also the beck of that housing will be slotted were it bolts to the motor . This will make it so i can adjust the tension on the belts .

is the one pictured above part of a kit? I like how compact it is compared to the mud motor kit. I want to replace a 2hp motor on my inflatable boat but don't want to drop a bunch of cash.

I have always wanted a Jon boat with a mud motor.....you can really get back into some emote places with one.

They are popular in Florida.

I realize I'm digging up an old thread here, but I would love to hear how this thing has performed since you finished it. I used to own a surface drive that was stolen, so I'm thinking about building one some day. I like the fact that you truly started from scratch, including having to buy your welding equipment! That's where I would have to start and it is a bit overwhelming. I would love to get some tips or plans or whatever you are willing to share.
Great job!

I love my mud skipper. Here it is in action on the Williamson River. I use it for fishing and hunting. I'm going to get a bigger one soon.

due to the 5000 feet elevation I had to change out to a air filter that flows better

Since I built my mud motor , I bough a vertical milling machine and made a bunch of gun parts . Mono Pod for my non- California compliant Ar -15 :) , muzzle brake for my Ruger MKIII and a tool to tighten it . Anti rotation pins in the AR15 and Trigger adjusting screw . I love building my own stuff . :) .

Rob...where did you find all the parts...ie, pulleys, bearings, shaft tube, etc. How do you know what size to get etc.

Sorry , I have not been on here for a while . I bought some plans off eBay . Then modified then to us a larger motor . I bought a lot of the part from Mc Castercar and the steel 4x6.tube for the belt housing from online steel company . I changed a lot from the plans .heavier steel in the transom part . Belt adjuster , 30 MM wide trimming belts vs vbelt. The plans were for a 8 go ,mine is 15 hp

RobK.

Sorry ment 30 MM wide timing belts

I just replaced the tank on top with a pulse fuel pump and replace the intake and exhaust .runs way better at the 5000 feet elevation . I now have a 4 gallon fuel tank on the floor with a priming bulb on the fuel line . It took a lot of weight off the transom greeting rid of the tank on top ,heavy exhaust , bulky air filter and cover . Way better air flow and fuel flow .gravity fed fuel from the tank on top did not keep up and the engine would starve .
