An excellent article written by Bruce Maiman about subsidies and much more for sugar growers appears in the SacBee today. Check out the link:

Direct cash subsidies were supposed to have been eliminated in the 2014 federal farm bill but I guess it was too much to expect that all of the subsidies and taxpayer funded bail-outs would reduced or eliminated. The industry response to Maiman's article is in the next link:

Consider how much lobbying money was reported to've been expended by the sugar industry (a small segment of agricultural activity) and you get an idea about the level of influence that the whole agriculture industry has on farm policy.
