Maple Burl Fy Display

This is a gorgeous pieces of high quality maple burl that I have split in half and made a "clamshell" designed, fly display. The hinges are mini brass hinges and I selected a stiff set so the box stays nicely in a propped open position. I installed 2 sets of 3/16" mini magnets for a VERY solid closure. It has 7 coats of aerosol, semi gloss SPAR urethane, even the bark spires are VERY well sealed and beautiful.
The insert is a highly figured, burl design cork that I have routed three, 1/2" channels per side. The space between channels is approx. 5/8" This design lends itself to larger flies. I had steelhead/salmon in mind for this box.
One side had a "rot knot" that I lost during machining and I filled with a slurry of sawdust and epoxy. this spot is clearly marked below.

that is the most gorgeous fly display box...hell, any box... that I have ever seen...and my dad works a lot with wood. Thank you for posting it, wish I could buy it.

Thanks a lot for the compliment Mike! It was a fun project. I had this piece laid out to cut up into another 3x5" fly box and the idea just hit me :)
I am in communication with a gentleman in Singapore who wants the set, so its a sale pending at this point. but nothings sold til the moneys exchange :)

We were out splitting wood (Sacramento valley oak) yesterday, and I found a small burl I plan to send to my parents to make a bowl out of. If it isn't rotten or too split, that is....
