I think this mayve come up before, but how about a forum section for off topic conversation? Like a "Lodge Den" or a "Lounge". Its pretty common on other forums and usually theres some pretty rich conversation. Some of us are just flat snowed in over the winter and would still like to converse with some of our forum pals, even if its off the subject of fishing...

Well the same rules usually apply to off topic sections as the rest of the forum. The other forums I frequent have excellent "lounges" with LESS politics than in fishing discussions. Off topic does not equal politics. Half FULL man! :)

Maida Heatter's Barron's Brownies

Quite possibly the best fudgy brownie recipe around.


Makes 16

2 oz unsweetened chocolate
4 oz semisweet chocolate
1 stick unsalted butter


1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1/4 c sifted all-purpose flour
1 c coarsely chopped walnuts
•Preheat oven to 325. Line an 8 in square baking dish with aluminum foil, shiny side up. Lightly butter foil.
•In a large heavy saucepan combine first three ingredients and melt over moderately low heat, stirring occasionally until smooth. Remove from heat and stir in the next three ingredients. Beat in eggs one at a time. Add the flour and stir until the mixture is smooth and shiny and comes away from teh side of the pan, about 1 minutes. Stir in nuts.
•Pour into pans and smooth top. Bake in bottom third of the oven for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

There are so many new craft beers now theres lots of good ones! I have to say, I love going to a new-to-me pub and getting their sampler. 6 or 8 small glasses of their lineup :) Then theres my buddy Rick here in town that brews some of the finest ales, stouts and lagers in his basement. But then theres the good ole Pyramid Hefeweizen. From a tap and unfiltered. That's my favorite beer :)

Big fly. I would love to. 2' of snow outside with not a drop of open water for 100s of miles. I saw your weather over there on the news. Record highs and record drought. I could think of a 100 things I could do if I had your weather, fishing or not. Here I try to get out for a couple miles of snowshoeing every day. God I miss the west! :(

I prefer the hoppy Pales and the IPA's. I am currently partial to 21st Amendment "Brew Free or Die", Racer 5, Stone IPA, Track 7 Hoppy Palm, and Lagunitas Hop Stoopid, and Rubicon IPA. I will try to sample new IPA's as often as I can. I find I no longer like the taste of any "malty" beer.

Tough question. I don't have a single favorite. I have been enjoying Trappistes Rochefort 8 when I've allowed myself to splurge on it. Also enjoy Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stouts on occasion. But my favorite is the one I'm drinking after a long day of fishing. ;-)

I've been an observer of this board for a long time and have enjoyed the info provided here, but I could no longer keep silent as I've seen topics that have eroded the boards initial purpose. I think people have chose to ignored the title of the thread under which we are now posting 'General Fly Fishing'.

There is plenty of information about fly fishing on this forum. Of more concern should be (IMHO) the argumentative nature of many of the posters, regardless of the topic. I have never seen a board eroded by off topic conversation, but I have personally quit many boards that were full of "know it alls" and "my opinion is fact". What would benefit this board in my opinion, would be a more open sharing of information, instead of holding knowledge so close to the vest. Just my $.02.

Unfortunately, since you have been lurking all this time and then you decide to step in with both guns firing completely unprovoked, you have 0 credibility. Why is this topic running in the General Fly Fishing section? Well that indeed begs a question. The same question can be asked of why you are still registered to post here... Where ARE the moderators?? Who are the moderators?? I've been here for almost 10 years and the "self moderating" format used to work. Bill Kienes kind disposition and welcoming spirit made it easy to be nice. We wanted to keep it civil as a thank you to our host. those days are about 6 years gone now. Moderation is necessary for a clean, civil forum. Just look at Dan Blantons board. He runs a tight ship and it works.

So. Who's going to give the yes or no on the campfire/lounge idea? If Yes, make it happen, If No, delete this thread.

by the way, theres a really simple way to avoid topics you don't like. Don't click on it. It's called "mouse restraint" ;) Kind of like a dog returns to his vomit.

One of the posters on this board that seems most upset with me is a person that also posts on Blanton's board and if he attempted to post the subject matter on Dan's board he posts here, Dan would hand him his hat and the door.

I have no idea how much Fishwest monitors this board and if and when they do take control of this board they should either kill it (I hope not) or establish clear what content they will allow. What kind of board do they want, or not want?

For the time being I doubt if any changes will be made but maybe one small change, change the name of this thread from 'General Fly Fishing' to 'General Fluff' so some newby looking for some fly fishing information won't be

misled by the title. They come in looking how to tie a bimini twist and leave doing the peppermint twist.

If this is really your major concern, then you must not really know how it feels to be a newbie and ask specific fishing questions on this board. I am a complete and total newbie to steelhead fishing, and I posted a question on the steelhead forum asking what are the common fly patterns used for the winter American run. The response? Crickets... Why? Why was the only answer I received a PM from one of the nicer posters on this board? I came looking for a bimini twist and I got my nuts twisted....

Dude. The THREAD is titled FORUM REQUEST. If you click into that, you must not be looking for instruction on how to tie a bimini twist, or where to fish on the AR. If you do click into it and read the first post and youre not interested, click away! When I m fishing with my buddies, we talk about all kindsa stuff, and it's good! Some of us on this forum are actually friends who have a lot in common.
The other forums I frequent (aside from Dan's) all have a "campfire or lounge" and frankly, its the MOST civil section on the forums. I just don't get what the big deal is. don't go there if you don't like it.

BTW, I just edited the original post in this thread for those of us that are a little slow ;)

A number of years I went to Loreto with Atwin King's group and Blanton was with the group and one evening over a few adult beverages Dan talked about the time and effort it took to properly monitor his board. He has banned a fair share of people over the years. Hear in lies part of the problem. It does take time and effort and probably some expense. For Dan it has been a labor of love.

In your case with getting the 'Crickets' answer was in very bad taste and if properly monitored it should have been removed.

Dan's board cant really be compared fairly (I know I made the comparison earlier) his format is so unique. Every single thread is out in the open... A preverbal "lodge den" if you will. Most forum platforms are like this one, where different subjects are discussed in different "rooms". For example, I have never fished for Shad and I don't have plans to, so I have no reason to go into that "room". I don't live in that area anymore so I have no reason to go into the Campgrounds/lodging "room". So for me, those sections don't even exist. That's how a "campfire" would be. If you don't like it, just pretend it doesn't exist, and it wont for you. Easy :)
