After 2 weeks of nada, I found the needle in the haystack. I landed my first winter adult of the season. I thought it was a salmon when it rolled and smacked its huge thrashing tail. Dam, not a,a, a salmon? Hot digity dog if it was not the largest chunk of steel ever to come to my hand... your turn, go look for that needle! Hoodog!!!!!!!

That's fantastic Andy......wish I could have watched you catch it.
Old Joe Shirshac said this is the time the big winter runs (Eel River strain) are starting to come into the Lower American River.......December.

Only a half dozen times, that's nothing. Try going out over 30 times and still no steel. Fish of a thousand casts!

If you are learning how to swing flies for steelhead it might be nice to get out with someone who is knowledgeable about it.
If you go one day with a guide it can really help you to be doing more right things and less wrong.
Andy Guibord can take you out on the Lower American River from now through spring to show you what the water looks like and how to fish it.

Going up north with Spey guide Jason Hartwick would be good too.

*In my lifetime I have learn much of what I know from getting to fish with really top fly fishers.
**Dec-March is winter run steelhead time on the Lower American River

Good on ya'
I'm admittedly a fish-photo-monger but I do leave 'em in the water...

Got it on the Andy's Sculpin, that's awesome. I have been using that fly the last few times that I have gone and managed to get a couple of HPs on it. They seem to like it and the grabs have been pretty good. Way to go.
