There's actually a fair of medium and small trout streams to the north of there, beginning a little over an hour away, in GA and neighboring states. I dare say more choice than daytripping from Sac for sure. I particularly liked the Ellicott's Rock area (border of GA, SC, NC), horsepasture river, whitewater falls, etc. There are also some trophy streams with larger fish, Noontootla, Walker Creek, come to mind.

Athens is better known for other activities, mainly involving the university there (students, drinking, music, football). If you time a fishing trip right, you can attend the viewing/reading of the Confederate Declaration of Independence (it's kept at the University) on the appropriate day by militaria in full dress, etc. At night, you can go to Stone Mountain and watch a lazer-light show of Jeff Davis and brethren galloping across the rock face and sing along.

Excellent southern barbecue in that area...you could see some places to get it on the way to fishing.
