In the winter, down on our low elevation rivers we get some little may flies hatching mid-day.

I guess the common one is the blue wing olive or baetis which is usually a size 18 here.

On calm, overcast days this can be fun with small steelhead and resident trout up on these nice hatches.

On sunny days the may flies get off the water sooner because their wings dry out sooner so they can fly right off.

On calm, overcast days it is more humid so the can't get their wings dried and developed as fast causing them to drift longer on the smooth surface and getting the fish really keyed into them.

Any trout rod with a floating line, 9' leader to 5x and #18 paradun should work. You might have to go to 6x but not likely.

Look for this on calm dark days.........
