I think it is very hard to land a big fish in the surf with all that outgoing pull.

At the beginning of the video I was thinking, "I hope he has on some 20# Maxima UltraGreen tippet and a good knot(s)!".....

Hard to tell which beach around San Diego they were fishing - no landmarks visible. The beaches we fish have
recently been plagued with big deposits of kelp and seaweed which really minimize one's chances of landing fish.
He was one lucky dude in several respects. Did a heck of a job, though. Would like to hear Loren E's thoughts.
6 and 7 weight rods are what many use down here. I sometimes use the 8-wt if I'm anticipating a strong on-shore.
BTW, the sinktip line that is used by many here is Rio's "Striper" line. Who knew?

Happy for these guys, seems like they've put ton time into it and targeted bigger fish specifically.

Saw th video on Fliflicker. Amazing stuff. From what they (the group) originally thought was hooked, I'd say they were targeting White Sea Bass which can get quite large, but were surprised to see a Striper. The guy that caught the fish looked like he really knew what he was doing. Great stuff!!! :D

BTW, Mark Won (from up this way) used to catch Stripers in the surf in Marin and Monterey Bay surf zones using ultra light rods and small flies.

Todd Setzer said they have caught some salmon down there in the ocean this year too?

Maybe they all followed some bait schools down that way?
