Mike Kuczynski, owner and founder of the Euerka Fly Shop, has been guiding the Lower Klamath River with a jet boat for over 30 years now.

Mike took Marilyn and I out for the day on the Klamath in his jet boat while we were traveling on our Honey Moon over 20 years ago.

Many of my friends and staff go with Mike every fall to chase the fresh run Steelhead on that lower river.

He said they had a great year so far which is what we have heard and experienced too.

Years ago Mike used mostly 9' #6 weight fly rods with a long belly floating line, a 9' 2x leader and small size #8/10 unweighted special Klamath River Steelhead patterns.

Today Mike also uses light Spey and Switch rods with floating lines and a tapered leader down to 1x now.

He said this years favorite pattern was the famous Silver Hilton in sizes 8 and 10 but right now he is going to a size 6.

Years ago in the bright sun more mid-day Mike used a fly called the Limey which was basically chartruse and black verigated chenille with a died Grizzly hackle, tied kind of like a Brindle Bug.

Today Mike has one of the best selections of quality Steelhead flies (fall and winter) and has good information on the north coast rivers too.

If you can believe it, Mike starts snooping around the lower Klamath River for Steelhead starting just after the 4th of July!

As we get older fishing that lower open river in a jet boat is much easier.

What I also like si that the fish are usually very fresh and come in all sizes from 10 inches to 10 pounds.
