I have fished for Steelhead on the tributaries of Lake Superior numerous times as well as the Feather and the San Lorenzo. I am still 0-(Lost Count) on catching these buggers! My youngest daughter is 3, so I am finally getting to the point of having a bit more freedom. I would love to get out and have my first real Steelhead encounter! If there is anybody going out this fall and needing an extra in the boat or someone to split gas or drive, please don't hesitate to drop me a line (yeah...poor fishing pun). Thanks for reading this and hope to share some water soon!

Hello "schurmo in San Jose".....

If we get a good run of half-pounder steelhead in the Lower American River I will take you out myself.

Sept/Oct are both good months for this.

The Lower Feather River in October is a good bet too but it is mostly indicator fishing with an egg imitation & nymph combo because of all the salmon spawning.

I think the Klamath and Rogue Rivers are the best bet for fall fly fishing for Steelhead.

September is good in the lower reaches and Oct further up.

Thanks a lot Bill! That is very kind of you! I have been in NorCal for over 5 years now and have been busy raising kids, so I am finally getting to the place where I can get out for a day here and there! I would love to join you on the Lower American. I have yet to fish that river. I look forward to it!

Aaron, after the upper section opens, I might suggest hiring a guide for the day--this way you can learn the river, the proper rig/setup, and catch your first...

The upper section is a near guaranteed catch the first week after it opens with nymphs/eggs. :)

Yeah Jed, I am definitely going to be looking into that as well. Getting to know the rivers has been the biggest challenge. I will hunt around for some guides and see what kind of trips they are offering. Thanks again!

You can PM Charlie Gonzales on the board, he is a great guide that knows the river incredibly well. Plus he can show you different ways to catch steelhead. I highly recommend him.
