I fished Lake Davis Sept. 4-9,from Old Camp 5 in the south end to Big Grizzly Creek in the north end and caught 4 to 8 trout a day. Water temp. was 70 degrees for the main body of the lake and 64 degrees for the bays and flats. The trout were on the surface at sunrise and late evening feeding on emergers i think...lots of bugs are still coming off through out the day. My best fly was a Marabou streamer with uv size 10, and the black wiggle tail size 10 worked 50% of the time for me. I'm still looking for a good emerger for those big trout that are feeding on the surface.

I landed 3 of these from a bay in the evening

Thanks for that report Gene. Those are real nice fish. I will be up there around the first weekend in October.

Hey Gene, that first fish is a real piggy. I began to crack a Stillwater mystery back when I had access to lots of good trout lakes. In the morning and evening when fish were behaving like you observed, I had fantastic results with a small pheasant tail nymph on a floating line. I would place myself amongst rising fish, and when possible, place the fly on a rise. A very good percentage of rises I cast to resulted in a grab. I really think many fish look back after rising and will take a fly that's there. I also had good success blind casting among the risers. But only in the first 10' or so of the presentation because I think it sunk below their focus beyond that. Not sure if this would work at Davis, but it worked almost every lake I've encountered that kind of behavior.
