September, October and November are great months for Steelheading with a swung fly.

Right now, September, I like to get out very early like my mentors Joe Shirshac and Al Perryman.

As Al Perryman said, put your time in on the lower American River so when you get up to some of the pristine water to the north you will have already developed some fishing skill. This is what I did......

This time of year I like to swing flies on a floating line for the first few hours in the lower reaches of our river.

Goethe Park down stream to River Park area is where I like to fish in September for new fish entering the river.

Naturally, my favorite water is the several 100 yards above the Watt Avenue Bridge.

I would fish there early with almost any wet fly in size 8 to 10. I might try a #8 BH Black Crystal Wooly Bugger? Olive is good too.

After work in the evening we like to use a #10-12 green/olive caddis pupa.

Try to use a leader the length of your rod and at least 2x tippet in case you hook a rare larger fish.

Right now is the time to swing flies, especially early and late in the day.

Half-pounder Steelhead in the lower American River in September usually average around 16 inches.

Try to get out there and show us your pictures......

PS: You can get some instruction from Charlie Gonzales or Andy Guibord who are seriously good Half-pounder guides.

PS2: If you want to really get into some hot Half-pounders that can be in larger numbers try going right now to the Lower Rogue River or the Lower Klamath River. Yahoo......
