View Full Version : How to set your disc drag on your fly reel for average trout situations.

First mount your reel on your rod then set the drag a little heavy for trout fishing.

Then make one fast strip of line off your reel like you would to get out some line to make your first cast.

Then lighten the drag a little.

Then make another fast strip.

Repeat this until you lighten your drag enough that your reel over spins or back lashes.

Then tighten it just enough that it does not over spin when you make a fast strip off the reel.


If you catch a big trout just use the rim control or rim brake to slow the fish.

Never adjust or play with your drag after you hook a fish....
