I have had to google some of your guesses. Im ashamed to say morning wood was on that list. And thats all i'll be saying about that LOL.
Most woods are known by more than one name. I wont be accepting any alternate names. Theres one name that will win the box. It is very rare, yet very well known to woodworkers. Theres a couple guesses that are very close...but no cigar. ;)

It looks a little like Mopane, a wood from southern Africa, although the grain on your box is much tighter.

Not yet ;)

Come on Jbird, you know one of my guesses is right!

Actually, nobody has guessed it right yet. When someone gets it, you can google the name of the wood to confirm it. Theres LOTS of info out there on it.

OK. Round two. You can have one more guess. If you havent posted yet, you can have two guesses.

I'm gonna drop a couple vague hints.
First hint...Heres a picture of the rest of the board I used for the box.

Second hint. The wood is native to South America.

Im gonna give away this box to someone!

I'm going with Pau Ferro. It really looks a lot like cocobolo (or Granadillo) but cocobolo is a little redder and is so oily I don't think you could put a finish on it.

...Its also sometimes called Tiger Rosewood, Ecuador Rosewood, Jacarando pardo, to name a few. It only has one true name though. Monterillo. It is actually VERY expensive and coveted by wood junkies. I stumbled accross this piece recently.

One of the funnier atributes is it is very desirable in wand making...As in magic wands. LOL. It supposedly possesses some dangerous powers according to the harry potter crowd. LOL

PS Rubberguy made contact and this box is gone. i may do some more give aways in the future. :)
