A great lake or river fly to have in your quiver for sure. I like them in a size 10 or 12 hook, and having a variety of bead colors on each style.
Place appropriate bead size on hook and and wrap thread to the end of the shank. I am using a brass bead for this, it will be used in lakes and I prefer to manipulate the line weight as opposed to fly weight.

Tie in preferred tail material like marabou, finn coon, or in this case rabbit off a strip. No need to worry about keeping an even body when tying this in as you will be dubbing the body.

Tie in a piece of small sized olive palmer chenille and secure it down all the way to the tail.

Start to dub the body with a longer fibered dubbing, in this case seal. I am also mixing two colors together in a coffee grinder, 5 pinches of dark olive to 1 pinch orange.

dub the body of fly liberally as you will be picking it out which I will show you in a couple of steps. leave just a little space right behind the bead so that you can finish the collar with minimal bulk.

Palmer the chenille forward like you would with a wire or hackle, evenly spaced with 4 or 5 turns will do. Tie off behind the bead.

Take a dubbing brush and give the fly a good rub. I like to use to make dubbing brushes out of coffee stirs that you would find at your local coffee shop because they are nice and thin. Take a piece of sticky backed velco, apply, and cut to size.

At this point you could finish the fly but I will be adding a collar of india hen. Strip one side and give it a couple wraps.

After tying off the hackle, build up the collar with your orange thread.

Here is a variation of it without the soft hackle and a two-toned marabou tail.
