Yeah Bill,
I've spent a lot of time filming Orcas around the world for major production companies. These creatures are absolutely incredible! When hard core scientists say that animals don't engage in play, you know they have never watched Orcas in the wild. Most of their time is spent playing. Even when they kill something like a sea lion, they play with their food before eating it. Bad manners.

We had one mess with us down near East Cape once. He tried to knock the motor off the boat. Our skipper was scared to death, gunned the motor and got us the hell out of there. Luckily it looked like Mom showed up and called the little bugger back. We were told that it was a delinquent teenage whale with a bad attitude. We also heard that the same whale dumped a panga on it's side and swamped it the week before.

Big beautiful, but strong animals.

Like a lot of highly evolved social animals, its the loners you have to watch out for. They are either very horny juvenile males making their way in the world or sicial outcasts. Either way they tend to be the ones that cause trouble.

When I was a kid in Ireland an Orca swam into the River Foyle probably chasing salmon, right through the middle of Derry City, through a boom, under a very low bridge and about 15 miles upstream until it hit some shallow riffles it couldn't pass. The thing stayed in the river for a couple of weeks gorging itself before leaving. Needless to say it was a bad salmon fishing season that year...and ony a few brave souls waded above their knees.

The locals called it Dopey Dick.
