Pyramid Lake

The lake has been pretty tough for the last week or so. This is very normal due to the moon phase. Pyramid has always been a little tough around the full moon. The water temperatures are creeping up into the low to mid 50’s and the next few weeks should be really good overall. As we get passed the full moon the fishing should keep getting better until the water gets to about 60 degrees. The spawning channel is full of fish and there are some huge Summit Lake and Pilot Peak fish in there. This should be a really good year for the hatchery. Fish are spread out all over the lake and it is really important to follow the wind and conditions out there right now. As we get more and more nice days, early morning and late evening should also be good times to fish. Maholo nymphs and Midges are still catching lots of fish either under an indicator or fished on a long leader with a floating line and retrieved really slow. Midnight Cowboy’s and Bloody Mary’s are great flies to use with a shooting head.

Truckee River

The Truckee has been in good shape almost all spring. We have a bunch of warm nice days forecasted and what little snow we have is getting ready to melt. We shouldn’t see too much run-off but there will be enough at some point to affect the river for a while. The flows are already up some now but not too much. The water is still really clear. Be careful wading, it is higher than it looks, especially below Boca Bridge. Nymphing has been the way to go for the most part although there is still a pretty good Baetis hatch on the lower river East of Reno. It should still be a month or so before we start to see the evening bugs start to appear. For Nymphing a Stonefly with a Baetis dropper fished under an indicator is a good way to go. Fish the edges and seams and as the water goes up really concentrate on the edges and slower water along the banks. Flows are: Town of Truckee 220 CFS, Boca Bridge 525 CFS, Farad 596 CFS, Reno 525 CFS.

Little Truckee River

Flows are 235 CFS. They have been steady for a while now. That is a great early season flow and it gives the fish a chance to spread out and move around more. The L.T. fishes more like a big river when the flows are at this level. A little more weight is needed on Nymphing rigs. Fish can be just about anywhere right now so this is a great time to explore some of the river you may not have seen or fished for a while. There is somewhat of a Baetis hatch, especially on non windy cloudy days. Nymphing with San Juan worms, Baetis nymphs and Zebra Midges with 5x-6x tippet is a good way to go.

East Walker River

Flows are 50 CFS but they have been really fluctuating over the past few days. This could affect the fishing a little but it has been really good lately. There are some Stoneflies out on the Lower California side and in Nevada. This is a great time of year to break out the dry-dropper set-up. Big attractor dries with a Baetis or Caddis nymph underneath is a good bet. Nymphing with a size 6-10 Stone fly is also worth a try. If you are planning to fish the “Miracle Mile” section in California bring some small midges and some lighter tippet.

Frenchman’s Lake

This time last year Frenchman’s was going off. It has started a little slow for some reason this spring but that could really change with a bunch of warmer weather headed our way. The fish are in great shape and the lake level is only a little lower than last year. Midges and nymphs in sizes 12-16 are always worth a try this time of year. It is still a little early for Callabaetis but it shouldn’t be long. Look for the reports at Frenchman’s keep getting better in the weeks to come.

Davis Lake

Davis has been fishing pretty well. Blood Midges are out already hatching some in the mid morning and also in the evenings. The fish are still coming out of spawning mode and are still hanging around creek channels and inlets into the lake. The water is already into the mid 50’s. Access is not an issue and most if not all the campgrounds are open. Warmer weather over the next week should really make Davis fish well. This is a great time of year to hang a blood midge under an indicator in 8-12 feet of water near drop offs and channels. Leach patterns fished with a type two sinking line is also worth a try.

Looks like some really great weather in the Sierras coming our way. Get out there and fish

Hey everyone. Kienes has the only remaining inventory in Red or Black Maholo nymphs for the year. If anyone is going to Pyramid or any other stillwater and Indicator fish I would suggest a call to the staff of Kienes. It will be at least 6 months before any are available again. They only have a few dozen left.

I have sold all mine and only have enough for clients at this point.

Support your local fly shop and keep someone from getting a real job and keep the passion for this sport alive.
