I will be fishing for northern pike when I go to Glacier this summer. Is fly color important or not? If so what colors should I use. Going to be fishing for them in the Blackfeet country in the first part of July.

Scott,
I used to take a fly rod on all my Fly-in trips with my Michigan in-laws hoping to tie into pike. Unfortunately,
the trips were always in mid-late Aug and I never had great success. Search the Kiene files for posts from the guy
from Minnesota (Afton Angler?) that has wintered here in CA. He chases muskies; but, should be able to give
you some good ideas. I think Bill Kiene fished Minnesota with him in the last year or so.
For top water, big Gurglers should work.
Best,
Larry S

All of the pike flies I've seen are large in hook size and length. They seem to have a lot of color to them, also. One fly that's seems ubiquitous to all fish is the Gurgler. Check out www.gurglersonline.com/ (http://www.gurglersonline.com/). If you Google Tying Northern Pike/Muskie Flies, you'll get some tyers and styles of flies.

For handling pike, my brothers-in law would always use one of those rubber gloves
with the "pebbly" surface. Those, and long handle needle nose pliers or hemostats.
The are slimy, toothy critters. Pretty good eating too.

Scott,
What little we have done in Alberta and N.W.T. Canada, all of or standard baitfish immi's that we use on the delta stripers worked VERY well. Probably white/white and chartreuse/white being the favs. Our first lesson was to cement EVERY step while tying for improved durability. Bunny fur works well and is very durable too.

Thanks everyone for the info. Hopefully in a short time I'll catch one.
