First let me say that I've thrown an 8 wt sissy stick for a couple years on and off mostly for steelhead. I have no clue on how to set up for shad. Can anyone point me in the right direction or send me somewhere that knows how to set up a 5 wt reel for shad. I live in the SF Bay area.
Also, what flies seem to work best?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I use amnesia for a running line since it is cheap and works. You will want to use shooting heads. I carry an intermediate, type 2, 3, 4, and 8. For a leader I use 15 or 20 pound for a butt section then 8 pound for the tippet. I use perfection loops for quick change. As for flies, get Jeff Ching's bloody maria, it is a proven fly that I have caught a ton of fish with. With low flies like right now I will start with a type 2 head and change as needed. You want to be just above the bottom without touching the bottom.

You could add a 10' fast sinking VerisLeader or PolyLeader to your 5 weight floater.
4 to 6 feet of 2x tippet for a leader.
Small Shad flies seem to be the norm for the past few years.
I think that beside standing in the right spot so your fly swings through a school of Shad, I would always fish that last hour right up till dark.
Be sure to jig or twich your fly at the bottom of the swing.

Just go into the shop with you rod and reel. They will set you up with everything that you will need!
