So this morning I slept in a little. I actually made it till 6:15am and for me that’s sleeping in. Get coffee, turn on the computer and look outside. No wind. Hmmm? I’m usually gone by now if I plan on fishing but decide to make some toast instead. My wife is now up and she asks “How come I’m not fishing?”.

That did it, and I’m gone promptly at 7:00am. A little late to get started but it’s still early and I have no agenda. After launching I head to my first usual stop. No other boats around and it looks like I’ve got the river to myself. Two or three casts and I get my first grab. Solid hook-up and heavy and stays down like bigger fish do. A few minutes later my first fish come to the boat. A nice eight pounder on my 8 weight rod. A couple more casts and another grab and another 7lb.- 8lber in the same spot.

I decide to move away and give the hole a rest and head upstream. I move about a mile to where the bottom has a sudden drop off and goes from 10’ over a shelf into 14’-16’ deep. Stripers like to hold in the deeper section and wait for bait to drift over them. I move above the drop off and cut the motor now drifting to the toward the shelf. A couple quick casts and I get slammed again and another 6lb.-7lb. striper comes to the net. Damn!  This fun, and I haven’t even been here an hour.

I decide to drop back to my first starting point and see if any more fish will cooperate. Wednesday I took Don Sleeper and his wife here and Don hooked up right away too but then it shut down. Hopefully not today. As luck would have it I get another hook up and one more fat schoolie comes to the boat.

Geez, why can’t it be like this all the time when you’ve got clients in the boat? I take fishing seriously, especially at the start of the day and until I get a couple of grabs and tugs. Now I’ve got four fish to the boat in just over an hour and I’m giggly. Same fly, same 8 weight,,,,,,, so lets change things and have some fun.

I had brought along a 7 weight with a new Airflo Depthfinder line that I wanted to try out on with some bigger fish and this was the perfect time to do just that.

The wind is starting to pick up and I decide to move across the river to another favorite spot we call the “Horseshoe Hole”. There’s an old horseshoe here that’s stuck in the clay marking a perfect holding area for stripers to rest and attack passing bait. True to form horseshoes also bring good luck.

I make my first pass using my 7 weight and get an immediate grab. A little smaller fish but still great fun on this lighter rod. A couple more casts and another grab, and then another and another. Each time bringing in a nice schoolie striper of about 4 lb-5 lbs. Time for another pass or should I quit and head home? You know the answer . I make another pass and pick up two more fish as if they were waiting for me,,,,, right in front of the “Lucky Horseshoe”.

Several of my buddies and customers know the Horseshoe Hole and today it held it’s charm. You’ll have to find it yourself though as good spots don’t come easy. Today’s fishing was easy. Seven stripers on a 7 weight,,,,,,,,,and four more on an 8 weight and I’m home by noon. And, the season is just getting started up this way.
