Sunday / Monday River Reports

I’d been hearing about fish being taken at Verona and even above Colusa but nothing is red hot yet except the Rio Vista area. Not wanting to drive that far I decided to hit Teesdale again on the Sac and see what was happening.

There were already a couple of trucks in the parking lot when we got there but these had to be sturgeon fishermen who spent the night on the river drowning bait.

Water looked good, 54 degrees, no wind and we’re optimistic. Hit all the walls and eddies, and every favorite spot without even a nibble all the way to just about Knights Landing. It’s not often that we get totally skunked but even a squawfish would have looked good yesterday.

So if the Sac is a bust I guess I better go check out the Feather again. The water over here has been going up and down like a roller-coaster and the last four days has really dropped. Whenever there’s a change in flows like this it takes a few days for the fish to adjust and get on the feed again.

I head to my first spot as usual (my honey-hole I call it). There’s been more big fish taken in this spot than anywhere else in the river for me and today it proved itself again. I had just made a few casts when I got my first grab and set hard. The fish immediately went straight into the timber and there was no stopping her from quickly breaking me off.

GEEZ, I’ve got the shakes for a minute or two as the adrenaline pumps throughout me. Damn, what a way to start my day. I switch over to my 9 weight hoping I’ll get another chance at this Mo again.

A few more casts and I get another grab but this one turns out a little lighter in the 5 lb.-6 lb. range. A fresh male spilling milt all over the deck while I remove the hook. A couple more casts and I hook up again, this time to a small mouth. Not what I was expecting but still fun.

I decided to give this spot a rest and moved farther up river closer to the falls. Three more schoolies come to the boat all in the 5 lb. to 6 lb. range and it’s been a pretty good morning.

On the way back to the dock I see Tim Caldwell in another boat playing a big fish. Tim and his buddy had been drifting minnows and this was his first fish of the day weighing in at 24 pounds. And yes, I did remind him about turning the big ones loose which he did.

So, there are a few fish starting to show up both rivers and I know the Sac will turn on soon. You just have to get out there, put in your time, and find them.
