I made it into "The city" this weekend and scored some serious exotic wood lumber. This will all be made into solid wood fly boxes. I dont know what knida pricing yet. Theyre gonna be insane! Youre looking $140 worth of raw lumber right here. Ouch!

Is that some cocobolo and bubinga Jay? Wonder how purple heart would work. Likely to brittle.

Hey Bill. From left to right, this is Granadillo, Which is African. Marble wood, (Middle eastern, I believe its the same as acacia). and African Padauk. These are very dense hardwoods and I'll be interested to see how my blades and bits hold up. They had some purple heart but that color is just too intense for me. It literally looks like pickled beats. It would definitly hold up as it is extremely dense and stable. I almost got an amazing piece of rosewood. Just couldnt bring myself to cough up $89 for 4' 1x4. I also picked up another figured wood veneer grab bag. It has some insane figured grains!

OK heres some new stuff...

3X5" Cherry. Unfortunately, this one has a router "check" on the inside that I put some filler on. Its just cosmetic and its invisible from the outside. But I have to discount it...

$45

This is a cherry wood 4X6. I would be just fine if this one doesnt sell! Its VERY nice!

More beautiful work Jay. Nice inlay job too. That must take some time with the Exacto, huh?

Funny someone mentioned purple heart. I have a very old purple heart log that my Dad got when we lived in Panama. It's about 3 ft long by rough cut 6 X 8. A buddy cut some sections off one end and sliced it into blanks for reel seats. He said it nearly ruined the band saw blade. It turns almost like metal. One other thing about purple heart is it will weather and age turning a dull gray. So you have to really seal it will well finish or you'll lose that brilliant purple color. If anyone wants some pieces (roughly 1.5 X 1.5 X 6 inches let me know).

Jbird, I have a piece of Koa I bought in Hawaii. If you want it let me know and I will go out and measure it to see if it meets your needs. It has been sitting here for a few years. Maybe we can trade for a discounted box. PM me if interested.

Hey guys. Please use my email to contact me about the flyboxes. My Kienes PM inbox is overflowing. If you sent me a PM in the last 12 hours, I may not have gotten it. I purged it, but I'd rather correspond via email.

Thanks guys for your interest!!! :)

ok folks. Heres the product of my new wood. This is the Marblewood (acacia) This is as good as it gets! This box will stop traffic if you whip it out on a street corner :) This is a 4X6". I have decided to keep the first box of each of these woods. kind of a "first fruits" thing. I can make a couple more of these before this wood is gone.

So, before I slap a price on this little gem, who wants to make me an offer? Highest bidder. If I dont get an agreeable price in the next few days. I'll price it. I have this add on other forums. This offer is just for Kienes until I put a price on it, then I'll post it everywhere.

I also made a box with the Granadillo. It's out of this world! I found the spar varnish wouldnt dry on it. It just stayed tacky. I dont know if its the density of the wood or oils within the grain. This wood is all kiln dried. I need to sand it back down to raw and I will just do a rub-on tung oil. The aroma of the Granadillo when I cut it was undescribable. It was so strong like a sweet, teak insence.
I'll have a picture up of it in the next day or two. Havent even touched the Padauk yet :)

Nice work Jay... Diggin it! That marble wood is beautiful. I really liked that fish inlay as well. Keep the fingers to keep up the good work;) Being a former cabinet maker I know how it feels to take a dado blade to the hand.

These are the prototypes of the exotic wood. If you would like one, I'll make it, as I do have enough wood of each kind to make 2 or 3 more. These are going to cost more than the first design. This is highly exotic wood. i have not put a price on any of them yet but I do have a number in mind. I would love to get some feedback before I post a number thats way off base.

From left to right... Marbled Acacia. (African Granadilla ***SOL OUT***) . African Pad auk

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v283/jbird35/JDS_2185_zpsbc03891b.jpg

The Acacia is incredibly hard wood. Its a blade killer ;) It would beat around VERY well. The other two are not quite as hard. The Garanadilla and Pad auk are finished with tung oil rather than spar. tung oil is the most beautiful way to show off the wood grains and feel the wood. It is not as durable as the spar though. Keep in mind, this is 100% wood. If it gets dinged or marked it is a cinch to sand and refinish it into like new condition

Thanks for looking :)

Hey everyone! I just want to say THANK YOU for all the business! I know most of you who have bought or ordered a box are just lurkers here, so thanks for seeing this and contacting me.
I have got to figure out how my head goes on! The response and pouring in of orders has my vision blurred!

Please note that i have a few more days to produce boxes (Many of which are orders to fill from paying customers) then I will be in Maui for a couple weeks and have some other work to do upon returning. So I should be back at the grindstone later in April. I will absolutely be taking orders the whole time so please feel free to do that. If you need something right away, I may already have it made or can make it before I leave.

Also please forgive me as I fumble thru all this. I am skilled with wood and craft, not so much with organization. Ive been seeing some of your emails kicked into my spam folder for some reason, so I will make sure to keep up on that. If I havent responded to your email, I may have missed it, please try again.

Thanks again you guys! :) :) :)

bump for the weekend :)

I'll be going into a flurry of production next week before I have to lay off it for a while. I still have enough acacia for one box and 3 boxes worth of the padauk. Got lots of cherry, walnut and maple. I can also make any combo of the burl boxes.

Hey Jay, how about building up a little stockpile and showing them at Kiene's Expo this year? Ed

jbird
03-22-2013, 07:29 PM
Thats a great idea Ed. When is it? Did you get your box yet?

There are some big things brewing for this crazy project. I am both intimidated and humbled by where my boxes are going to appear... stay tuned!

Ed Wahl
03-22-2013, 08:27 PM
Yes I did. It's beautiful. Now I'm contemplating what to fill it with. I'm leaning towards tying some old school (really old) wet flies. The expo is normally the second weekend in April, maybe Adam or Bill can confirm? It'd be a great excuse to show up and BS with all the faceless names.

Update bump :)

I have been making a lot of these things! today is my last day of production for a while. If you ordered a box and dont have it yet, you will soon :) I'll ship the last of the orders out by friday.

Here is my latest batch and these are all going out to my new friend Gary Siemer at http://www.vintageflytackle.com/ These will all be available on his website at my SRP.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v283/jbird35/JDS_2229_zps63f11756.jpg

What do you think of this design? Its Black walnut and hard maple.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v283/jbird35/JDS_2216_zpscade0fbf.jpg

I will be unable to make anymore boxes for 3-4 weeks. After that, I plan on having some new cool woods and will build my inventory. If you want a box, feel free to contact me anytime. I wont be making them for a few weeks but I can answer questions and take orders.

Thanks everyone!

Jay

More beautiful craftsmanship, Jay. I like the two toned box. In fact, you could probably build on that design with a couple thin trim bands and be able to make use of some smaller, left over pieces of wood.

jbird
03-27-2013, 03:05 PM
You read my mind Doug :) I'll be collecting some nice wood for these boxes and I wont let a scrap go to waste. Laminating some cool combos of exotics could be divine!

Wow! Really nice! Thats right in line with what I'm planniing. Did you make those nets too?

Fubar
03-27-2013, 07:22 PM
We are definitely thinking the same. I have a large pile of strips and thin ripped boards left over from squaring rough-cut lumber or left over dimensional cuts from other projects over the years. And I hate to throw anything away. Those are a few nets that need to be routed, and finished.

That maple and walnut box is awesome! Do you put Cork in all of your boxes?

jbird
03-27-2013, 07:54 PM
Yes. The cork is easily available as cork tiles and I rout the ridges. I just love the thought of cork. It goes with the wood theme. I have been looking thru sme catalogs of figured, exotic cork tiles. That would be REALLY cool.

I have been in contact with Mill Stream about rippled foam but have yet to get any. Where do you get your slitted foam?

Hey guys. Just aquired some gorgeous wood. There will be a limited number of boxes from these but they are AWESOME!

These are just blanks I cut to 4X6 and quickly hit them with the bench sander. When they get a coat of finish theyre gonna really pop!

From left to right. Brazillian Lacewood. Rippled Maple. No I.D. yet.(Possibly West African Utile)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v283/jbird35/JDS_2231_zps86a19935.jpg

The rippled maple is unreal! Extreme 3D "flash" in the grain. Lacewood too!

Phil that maple is some of the best I've ever seen! Its so hard to catch the essence of wood grain in a photo. I was hoping to line up the koa for this photo, but it hasnt shown yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Update! :)

I'll be coming home from Maui tonight/tomorrow. I found some gorgeous figured mahogany and a small plank of monkey pod thats outa this world! I have the lacewood, rippled maple and mystery wood from pervious post. I also have lots of cherry, walnut, hard maple, soft maple and a beautiful piece of hickory. I should have Phils Koa waiting for me at home too. These are all gonna be fly boxes! Along with my original design of veneer. I have some business to attend to over the next 7-10 days, but plan on making a whole mess of boxes after that. Let me know if you'd like one! jayspencer69@gmail.com
