Pyramid Lake

A long cold spell in the Reno area has the lake water temperatures down to around 41 degrees. This is usually about the coldest the lake gets in the winter. It is supposed to be a little warmer over the next week or so with sunny skies. The fishing at Pyramid is pretty average for this time of year. Cold water in December-January tends to move most of the fish into deeper water in search of a little warmer conditions. There are however a few fish being caught from shore anglers. This year continues to produce some large fish. There was an 18 pounder caught last week and Reno local Adam Heuer caught and released an 11 pound fish on Saturday. The fish are really spread out and the reports are coming from all over the lake. It is pretty much a given that you are not going to catch more than a few fish a day right now but the chance to catch a fish of a lifetime keeps anglers coming. February is a great month to catch big fish at Pyramid. There are less little fish in shallow and the larger fish make a pass through shallow water from time to time. There are fewer fishermen and more chances when the fish come by. A bunch of different flies are also catching fish. Bloody Mary’s, Midnight Cowboys, Olive Martini’s are always good and White Wooly Worms and Popcorn Beetles are great options for droppers.

Note: Use 12-15 pound tippet on your shooting head set-ups. If you do get the chance to hook into one of these monsters don’t take a chance with light tippet. Go to pyramidlakeflyfishing.com for more info

Truckee River

We have had some warmer days over the past week. After dealing with ice in the river for most of January, we are seeing some much improved conditions now. The river is in great shape and the flows are perfect. The water is still cold but this time of year if you get a day when the sun comes out and the water warms up only a degree or two the fish can get active. There have been some nice Browns and Rainbows caught over the past week and this week could be even better. Access in California is getting easier now with the snow in most of the parking lots all but gone. It does not look like we will get any substantial weather for the next week or more. The further you go downstream the better the fishing. The water has more time to warm up and the fish are more active. Late mornings to mid afternoons are the best time to be on the water right now. There is not much in the way of bugs right now except for the occasional Baetis. Fishing smaller streamers in deeper pools can be effective but it also eats up water faster. Nymphing with a small dark Stone Fly with a Baetis dropper is also a good way to go. Fish the slower water, deeper pools, slow moving seams and places where fish do not have to work too hard. There is plenty of oxygen in the colder water and the fish will usually not be in faster water in these conditions. Flows are: Town of Truckee 186 CFS, Boca Bridge 367 CFS, Farad 402 CFS and Reno 395 CFS.

Little Truckee River

Flows are 110 CFS. The road still has snow on it starting at the inlet to Boca. It is packed down for the most part and Friday you could get to the top parking lot in a 4-wheel drive. There are some boulders in the road that have fallen from the hills on the sides on the road so be careful. Warmer weather could loosen up the packed snow on the road and make it a little trickier as the snow melts.

The fishing has been pretty good over the past few days. There has been a few Baetis hatching and if you can get up there on a cloudy warm day it could be epic. Boca Reservoir is still all but iced over except for a little area around the inlet. There have been some fish hanging out in the open water there as well. Nymphing with light tippet say 5X to 6X and small size 18-22 nymphs is doing the most damage. The water is really clear and flies with little to no flash on them are a must. Beads can even spook the fish right now. For dry fly enthusiasts take your time and try to find a working fish. They have not seen many fishermen lately and can be fooled with one cast. Beating the water with a dry fly or a nymph rig for that matter is not the answer. Look for fish or fishy areas and make fewer casts. There is not much snow in the meadow right now and getting around is not too difficult. There are some snow drifts and deeper pockets and the expected warmer weather could make it a little more difficult over the next week.

East Walker River

Flows have been holding steady at 31-33 CFS for a few weeks now. There is still a little ice around the edges especially in the slower moving water downstream in Nevada. It gets really cold in the Bridgeport areas this time of year and overnight lows commonly are in the single digits. There is no hurry to get down there too early in the day. The best fishing is late morning to early afternoon. Let the sun get on the water a bit and warm things up. The fish like just about everywhere else are in the deeper, slower pools and runs. The flows are low and fish get stacked up this time of year. A stealthy approach, smaller flies and lighter tippet is a must. Small Baetis nymphs in sizes 18-22 are a good bet for a dropper with a little bigger one like a size 16 Pheasant Tail as the lead fly. This is a good time of year to be “High Sticking” for sure. If you are going to use an indicator use one that blends in more. Big thing-a-ma-bobbers are not the way to go right now.
