I'm far from in the know on swinging, (New to it myself) but I know Steiner Flat has a pretty good run, as well as up above the douglas city bridge. There's also a few good runs at the pull out on Old Lewiston Road just north of Oak Ranch Drive (West side of the road you can't miss it). It's a little bit of a walk to the river but some good runs, a few of em downstream will require you to wade along the shore as there is fenced private property. Sammy who's on here had a pretty solid trip a few weeks back swinging golden stones you may want to send him a PM.

I found it pretty helpful to use google maps when I was there, I use a streamtime map as well but it doesn't show you nearly all the good water. I used my iPhone and google maps, apparently it cache's an area within 10 miles of where you are if you open up the app and go to your current location (You have to have a cell signal at that time). Then while I was on the river with no signal my gps was still active so I could open google maps and view the river up and down stream from where I was. While at one location listed on the streamtime map I found three more runs downstream not listed.

Not much help but good luck!

1 on the swing is a good report! Best of luck. Be thorough as possible. 2 casts, 1 or 2 steps. With the water as cold as it is, they're not going to move much for a fly so you want to cover every possible inch.

Lots of winter fish in the river below the south fork... really high but you can still swing the soft edges with big bugs. This rain and snowmelt may put it out of play though

I'm a novice at the swing too, but I have been spending a lot of time on the Trinity this fall. I think you've gotten some good advice so far. I'll PM you a bit more, but honestly in my experience the trickiest part of fishing the Trinity has never been finding enough good water; the tough part has been finding enough time to fish it all. Well that, and convincing the fish to hang on a little tighter for my over eager hook sets.

good luck,
JB

I went to a great Steelhead presentation at the Davis fly club meeting last month by Spey guide, Jason Hartwick.

At the end of Jason's powerful Poer Point presentation he told the crowd to remember that October is the most sucessful month for swinging flies for Steelhead in Nor Cal.

At this time he uses mostly a two-handed fly rod with a floating line with a long 12' tapered leader with wet and dry flies.

At that time Jason is living up on the Trinity River and guiding both the Trinity and Klamath Rivers.

I think Jason seems to guide more from the South Fork of the Trinity River and downstream in the fall.

Jason only guides with two-handed rods swinging flies.

He is living over on the coast for the winter near Fortuna, CA, guiding on the Eel and few other rivers in that area.
