As some of you have seen I got an Ocean Kayak so I can fish in the ocean and go for some crabs. So I headed out to Timber Cove with some buddies to fish for new fish with conventional gear. Paddle out through the seaweed and went for water in the 50 - 80 range. Did all my fish jigging a 2 ounce iron with a rubber squid skirt over it. Totally different from fly fishing for sure. But for me it is about being out on the ocean again. Growing up surfing I enjoy just sitting out on the water with the swells taking you up and down. If you've never surfed, you'll never understand about being out there. But back to fishing, so I was basically dropping straight down to the bottom and just jigging. I got lucky and caught a ling cod, canary I think it is called and a black rock fish. All fish were released for now but from now on the lings and the rock fish will become dinner. I love my new kayak!!

This guy and others like him were everywhere. Remember if it is in our waters on the west coast it will more than likely sting you.

Great trip Scott!!! Love the photos. Looks like you'll be bobbin around in all of the ocean coves now.... Altho, you must be a real animal driving over, paddling a kayak around and driving back from Timber Cove in the same day (YIKES!!!!) ;)

I love rock fishing from a yak. Mine was an old Aquaterra Chinook, sold the last one last year. I think I'll sell a canoe and another kayak next season and pick up a SOT for the salt.

You might re-think the motor, Scott, if you plan to use it on the Delta. I know I would. The OK Torque is way overkill; you can get a used 30-40# motor, take off the head and move it forward and have great control and something to hold you in place against the tides and current when fishing, and only mount the motor when you need it. Steer with your paddle.

Scott, a couple questions, sorry....

Any more trips out in your kayak? What kind did you buy? How often do you think the water would be too rough to go and is there somewhere you are watching regarding water conditions? K

Hi Katz,
All my fishing for the last couple of months has been out of my kayak. I bought a Ocean Kayak Trident 13 and love it. I have been out in the ocean for crabs as well and have been fishing lakes. It is nice to cover a lot more water compared to my float tube. When I am going to go to the ocean I check the NOAA bouy info. As for the water being too rough, I have yet to tun into that, once the winds get over 20 mph you have to deal with being able to paddle back into shore if it is an off shore wind.

PM me if you have any more questions. And when shad season starts up I'll be kaykaing above the holes and catching a ton more fish and fishing areas I use to have to hike to.

Sorry for the late response, I just noticed the post today.

Scott, loved it. You're reaching out, and I admire that. Better than that Cuban rum. No you can't take it home--better drink it here.. We did.
Another thing Bill K. did for you/us/me.
