I'm just curious to know what rod configurations everybody is planning on using this upcoming season? It is right around the corner you know....

I have a 9'6'' 8wt VPS that is my goto steelhead stick, teamed with the Rio steelhead taper line, this baby is a mending machine!.... a little heavy though.....

Planning on getting (if santa is good to me) ... 10' 6wt TFO BVK or a 10' 6wt Redington CPX ... perfect for the lower sac or feather, but a little worried that a 6wt would too light for the A.....but that would require hooking a fish on the A, which seems pretty unlikley...:p

What about you?

I believe a lot of people are moving to two handed rods. Not just on the American but the trinity, some are even using them on the lower sac.

I used to use a 10' 6wt Scott on the A and Trinity years ago. My go to now for the winter run is a 12'9" 6wt ACR strung up with a Airflo 475 skagit. Sometimes I will break out the ACR 1327 scandit matched up with a Airflo 540 skagit. I really like the 6wt two hander for winter fish, lots of fun playing fish with and it has handled up to 14lb steel so far.

I think a 13' #7 Spey rod with a Skagit head and MOW tips would be about average for most two handed casters for winter on the American River.

Lots of folks have a lighter 12'6" #6 Spey rod and that should be OK too.

I'm running a Sage One 12'6" #7. Lamson Guru 4. Line is Rio Skagit VersiTip 500gr and it works just plain and simple perfect. I have hooked a few salmon and got one steelhead that I pulled in. I think I got a super nice setup for California winter steelhead :D Can't wait to get into more steelhead this winter.

Spey and switch rods 11 to 14ft and 7 to 10 wt.

The way I approach the American is, I am working on my casting. If I happen to find a fish, great. Some months I might even tie on a fly.
