Anyone been up to the Yuba River lately? If so what are some good flies to throw out there? Thanks for any info.....

I plan on going out with a friend and try to get some fish tomorrow morning.

I was there last Monday. They took #18 mayfly emergers on the surface and micro-mays under an indicator. Very few salmon or redds in the middle stretches--they were congregated downriver. Hope this helps.

The yuba has been kicking out the smallest fish i have ever seen on the river. I don't know if they are smolts or what (would seem to be a weird time for smolts), but lots of fish in the 8-12 inch range. If your going to fish bring a four weight....I'm sure the guides are catching them but i can't remember the last time i caught a quality fish on the yuba the lat few montsh.

Well I did manage to get one this afternoon. But I will say this that you have to really work for them! They just dont give a crap for anything it would seem almost. So then I stumbled over this little guy.

Then I tied on the best fly that looked close to this mayfly. (A Blue Dun Para) Then on the first cast boom this guys showed up and wanted to eat!

And this was the second dead salmon I spoted.

The numbers of salmon have gone down in the mid section as mentioned. However the fish are still looking for eggs, just not as crazy as it was a couple of weeks ago. I would still nymph an egg and one or two of the following during the day. Rubber leg stones (brown with brown or olive legs), red headed stepchild, and Yuba Pupas in the afternoon and evening. If its a cloudy day you will likely see a decent BWO hatch in the morning and midday, so I would have some olive S&Ms and Military Mays handy. Good Luck!

Thanks for all the info guys !!!!!! I will be tying up some flies then. Yesterday I ended up getting some flies for Sportsmans Warehouse because I did not have time to tie up any of my own. But now I will be ready. I saw quite a few fish rise they were just not talking much. Except for the one that took my Blue Dun Para.

I am thinking of going to the yuba tomorrow. How did you fair? I have never fished the Yuba and wanted to explore. Any suggestions on where I should go?

My first idea was to go to the hwy20 bridge and fish from there. Although I have heard that land access to the river is tough.

Yes, I don't post much but I have been lurking for years. :)

Thanks.

My experience this week was close to what has been already posted:

some, mainly smaller fish, caught on dries. Lots of pressure from boaters/bankers/clinics/etc. Low water, easy to get around. Zero success on any form of egg.

I would try to fish some streams that are better during this time. Maybe its time for a little upper Sac action. I was able to see a bunch of little guys coming out of the water but none that were decent in size as everyone else has stated. The one I got in the pics above was about 10".

My first (two) trips on the Yuba were last Sat and Sun. Fished brown rubber legs and poopah for most of the time, first day was really about learning the float. Lost two 14-16 inch fish, one on each fly and landed 3 smaller ones. On Sun landed 16" and lost two other decent sized ones, landed two 8-10 inchers again one each fly wise. I had more action in the sections below HWY 20 bridge. Saw some small BWO and cadddis and few fish on the top. Fun float, looked like flows were low enough to access plenty of water from shore.
