August/September is the prime time here...

Fly fishing in the day time with fairly large dry flies is not common in too many places.

These river have beautful wild west slope Cutthroat trout and big Bull trout.

Bill, I have fished the Fernie area several times and it is as advertised. The Elk River is a high volume fishery, and since its C & R dry fly you can expect to see some of the cutts' mouths get pretty torn up. Ny favorite waters are the Wigwam River and Bull River, plus a number of smaller creeks.

I used a Fernie based guide service, Elk River Guiding. They have a great fly shop in town and I have seen them be very helpful to non-guide customers. http://elkriver.ca/

Visit their website and click on "The Waters" & "River Reports" to get nice descriptions and pictures of the various waters. in the area.

You can fly into Kalispell, MT (Glacier Park) and drive about 2 hrs to Fernie, BC.

I was up there a couple years ago and it was great (although we got pushed out of the forest campsites due to fire danger). BC had just instituted a permit system and extra fees for prime waters. My Alberta friends were really peeved because it applies to them as well, so we stayed on the east side of the pass (sw Alberta side). Has anyone gone and dealt with this without a guide lately?
