Wind? We ain't scared of no wind!!!

After hours and hours twisting Gene's arm to go fishing with me on the weekend he finally gave in. It seems once you retire you only fish during the week unless I bug you for hours, ok maybe minutes. So off to Davis Lake Gene and I went around 5:30 in the morning. We get on the water a little after 8 and start heading to our first of many spots. It took about 10 minutes for the wind to start up and it never let off. As a matter of fact by the end of the day surf was up and the fish were still biting. Had a great cold windy day on the water. Once you found the trout they were more than willing to bite. I ended my day with close to about 20 thanks to Gene letting me hit a spot no one had been on all day thanks to the hunters that were there earlier. Once they left we headed over and with the wind blowing 13+ with gusts to around 15 and higher we hit the flats. I was catching nice trout in water less than 3 feet deep in howling cold wind. It was freaking awesome. I had a couple back to back catches and lost plenty of others. Despite the cold wind we had a great day, so glad we made it out before the real storm comes in.

I call this a flatnosed rainbow. This special fish fought very hard and flew through the air more than once.

Nice work you two! Just wait until this storm rolls through, it will really kick the fall bite into overdrive! The wind can be your best friend if you let it. I'll be up for trips Thursday - Saturday; hope you didn't beat up the cove too bad ;)

Thanksg for twisting my arm, and yes when you are retired you only fish during the week days, and leave the combat hunting and fishing for the weekend crazy's....no offence Scott.
On the way home Scott and i talked about why he caught more fish then me, I was telling him that some of the places we fished would only be big enough for one person fishing it, if your fishing behind Scott or someone else you will catch less fish, so you have to separate and find your own water.
With the wind blowning it was all about blind casting all day long....i was doing 20 good casts a hour for 5 hrs, we cover a lot of skinny water in our float tubes....3 miles of creek channels, coves, flats, and a couple of bays....we had back straps on the tubes so we could pick them up and walk to a new area.
The fish are there in the skinny water you just can't see them, we would stick our fins into the muddy bottom to hold position in the wind so we could make a cast or two, then move on to a new spot and make another cast. Sometimes you would find a plod of fish in a area and catch 5 or 6, then you would move again.

Jon: If you are fishing behind Scott and me, the catching would be slow for a couple of days :-)

I'm green with envy...threw the back out racking leaves and pine needles...those are some beautiful fish!!! Love the flat nosed trout. They all look clean and ready to go! Hopefully this back of mine won't keep me off the water too long...it's a great time of the year to set a hook.

Thanks, great report! I was up at Davis this past weekend too. Didn't catch as many fish as you did, but I still caught enough to make it interesting. I didn't spend that much time in the skinny water, but I did have a few takes there. Most if my fishing was in the coves on the west side. The fish were taking blood midge on the point under an indicator, they didn't touch the dropper, where I tried all sorts of nymphs. Also threw wooly buggers on an intermediate line for nothing. All of my catch were pretty 15-18" fish. Certainly better fishing than I've had in recent years at Davis.
