Thanks to all those on the kiene's board who shared information with me. It was a great trip. Was up there for a wedding so only was able to fish early in the mornings for a couple hours each day, but I made the best of it.

Made the long drive to idaho on Thursday. It took 8 hours or so and we ended up in Boise for the night. For those of you who have never done the drive, its easy, but absolutely ugly through Nevada! The Idaho state line, only an hour and fifteen to Boise is always a welcome sight.

Stayed the night in Boise and left around 445 am the next morning (somehow talked the lady and mother in law to drive up separately :D) to make the 3 hour or so trek up to Stanley Idaho, nestled in the sawtooth mountain range on the banks of the Salmon River. On the drive up it was mostly dark. I caught my first glimpse of the sawtooth mountains as the sun started to come up.

Here is a pic of the sawtooths during the day---sorry about the image quality, forgot the camera so all the pics this trip were with the Iphone.

As you can see in the background, there is some smoke in the are. There has been a fire burning in the area for 9 weeks, at about 150,000 acres. When you drive into stanley there is a massive fire camp. This pic only shows about 1/5 of its size.

Here is a look at how thick the smoke was on my drive through the Salmon River canyon on the way to fish. If you look in the distance, that's not fog or clouds, its smoke.

Because of the fire, stopping on the highway the first 14 miles outside of stanley towards challis/clayton was prohibited. Missed out on probably the best looking water in there. Ended up fishing both mornings I went out, about 20 miles out of stanley towards Challis/clayton on I-75. Scenery went from more of a Canyon with pine trees to foothills with some nice runs like this.

I caught all my fish on streamers. Anything natural color worked but a muddler minnow and pond-smelt with a rabbit strip seemed to work best. All the fish I caught were found in the deeper pulls. Didn't seem to catch any in the faster water, probably because I was fishing early while it was still cold out, hovering around thirty degrees. I caught one small rainbow, one smaller bull trout (first bull trout), and a bunch of west slope cuts. Cuts averaged 13-15 inches with the biggest going around 18, which I understand is pretty good size for this river. I would deffinately be back. Stanley is an awesome town with beatiful scenerey and great fishing. Here are a few pics that I took of some of the fish.
