Poly Leaders vs. Mono Leaders

I'm wondering what are the opinions on poly vs. mono leaders. I love poly for casting practice at the casting pond, but I always wonder if they're too thick and bulky for clear, low conditions. They're great for fishing a large skater, like a ska-opper, but I'm not sure where they fit in after that.

Any thoughts?

I normally make my own leaders using various # test of Maxima - normally start at 20# but at times start at 25# and just step down - wrorks very well for almost anything I want to turn over
