There was a thread recently about vest or chest pack and I chimed in w/ a vote for the Sling.

I just took a bike ride along a river and wanted to bring my gear, including a rod. The sling has an extra strap to hold it in place on your back so it is sort of an upside down Y config; I used that Y to hold a rod in place across my chest (and above my big fat gut, force once that monstrosity came in useful :)

Here is a pic of all the stuff in that bag:

And here is the list of stuff (you could get more in there if you wanted)

Stuff hanging on the outside
Some Dap floatant (yeah, old school)
Hemostats
Clipper
Stuff inside:
Orange bag: first aid kit
Tippet 1x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 7x
Leaders
Simms bug juice, Aquel floatant, leatherman
First fly box is thick, double sided, the next 3 are thin,
the cortland is thick again, as is the mel cottons next to it.
Cheater glasses, under water camera, J Forbes reel

and as mentioned, a Sage Vantage 3wt under the straps.

Worked great on a bike and I could see carrying the rod that way on a long hike in.

I love this bag, it's easy to get into it to get stuff, easy to put it on your back out of the way while you are fishing.

I'm predisposed to like this solution, I have a sling as one of my camera bags and love it for the same reasons. Carries lots of gear, gets out of the way.
