Hey everyone, I'm camping at sugar barge right now. Ive been pursuing topwater largemouth on the fly with limmited success. This evening I did get a nice pound and a half or so bass, and a seemingly pretty big chaser as well. Along with a few other tiny guys. I just wanted to see if anyone had any advice whatsoever? Something I'm particularly curious about is what speed should I be stripping topwater flies in at? Faster seemed to work better for me but I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to bass fishing... Not sure if it was a fluke or not. Other than that, I've been having a blast teaching my little cousins (8-13 years old) how to fly fish by getting them into blue gill on a 3 weight! That's been a blast! But anyways, any advice for those largemouth would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello Ryan,
I was on the Delta yesterday with my brother-in -law. First off, BOY IS HOT ENOUGH??? Anyway, very little wind made the fly fishing easier. Remember, that in many areas of the Delta, there are primary (by the bank) weed lines and secondary deeper weed lines. During low tide the LMB's will move off the shallow water and move into deeper secondary locations. Yesterday, we found more fish out in the deeper water with mid water flies over the deeper weeds. Also remember that clear days produce more light which the LMB's would rather not be around. As a side bar we also had results plopping weedless flies on the cheeze mats. FUN! Try moving East of Franks....
Tight Lines,
Bob

Thanks for the reply Bob. Your advice helped. I fished out away from the bank more when the tide was down, and steered away from the clearer water. And yeah it was ridiculously hot out there! I tried to post some pics but the upload failed each time though. But thanks again.

Keep moving along the shoreline to cover a lot of water.

We use the Umpqua Swimming Frog patern.

Cast in deep and strip it out slowly with a heavy tippet and weed guard.

Fish on top mostly early and late in the day or in the shade.

When you do get a take on top do the strip strike to get them hooked well.

May is Kevin Doran's favorite month for top water LMB but I think early and late with low light levels all summer can be good too.
