I fished 5 bays in one day for 3 days straight....started at Fairview point, float tube across Mesquito bay into a secret bay, put my tube on my back and walked across to Freeman bay, kick across Freeman bay to Cow bay then went back into Freeman bay and kicked to the northend of Freeman bay, then i put the tube on my back and walked over to another secret bay kicked across that and back into Mosquite bay to Fairview point. Scott V. join me for 2 days and Shigg tried to follow us on 1 day untill he lost his oar. The first day was the best day fishing and as it got warmer the trout back out of the shallow water into the deeper cooler water. The afternoon water temp. on the last day was 74 at the surface. The trout were scattered across the Northend of the lake, most of the trout were 15-17 inches but these trout were very strong fish, you throught trout were twice the size they were....next fall these trout are going to be some hot fish to hang onto. We caught between 5 to 10 fish a day, could have caught more if we stayed in the places that had fish....but i wanted to sample a lot of bays. A black wiggle tail worked for Scott and a gold and burn-orange wiggle tail worked for me.

Also on the last day i drove off with 2 fly rods on top of the van, i think they fell off in the parking lot at Fairview or the dirt road out of Fairview :-(

Nice post Gene....thanks.

That Scott V is like a fart in the wind...he is everywhere.

May/June is averagley good on Davis Lake in CA.

After the 4th of July it can get very hot on top driving the fish very deep.

I think it is usually blood midges AM & PM and damsels through the mornings?

Heard the 'Davis Flyfishers' did exceptionally well last weekend....June 9-10, 2012.

I like to cheat a little so I will usually go with Don Rotsma and Rick Jorgensen who k ow the lake very well. Being a pretty good caster, I just do what I'm told and it usually works well.

October is the month, on average, when the fish are more suicidal and smoking hot.

Gene glad to hear you had a productive trip. Did you see any damsels in the water? I'll keep an eye out for those rods. The freeman Crk road doesn't generally see too much traffic since they cut it back but there was a fishing derby yesterday so it's anybody's guess if the rods are still there. You might give the Grizzly Store a call and let them know...there are still a few honest people in this world...you never know.

Just re-read your post...Fairview not Freeman...they've been picked up...but I'd still try the store...good luck.

As always, had a great time camping at Davis with Gene and other friends. It was fun with jello shots, cookies, trout, and low flying jets going faster than anything I have ever seen before. Weather was nice, fishing was a little slow but still got a good enough number of nice fish. Bummer Gene lost his rods off his van, I hope they come back.

Gene & Scott, thanks for the pics! Nice looking fish, if we get our snails back they will be much bigger. Did you see damsels and if so what kind of numbers?

Jon.

FRSam and Jon....after 4 days of fishing all through the shallow bays and the deep weed beds i saw 1 damsel nymph swimming and very few adult damsels for the amount of area we looked at, saw a couple of snails floating by, lots of callibaetis and some big caddis.
The camp host said that he was trolling some lures 18ft. down in front of lighting tree, and caught some nice trout that was packed full of blood midge larvae (little red worms)
