I just completed the Lance Grey's Fly Fishing the Surf Clinic and saw that a two handed or spey rod may be the better for northern CA surf. Any suggestions on rods, reels, etc. for surf fishing?

I'm certainly not an expert but I've been using a Beaulah, 6/7 weight Switch rod for NorCal and a 4/5 for SoCal. Any good brand high line capacity reel will do. If fishing for Stripers, you'll need a good drag system. That said, pick a reel that is easily maintained and where most of the moving parts are easily cleaned/maintained. I have a couple of Elixir lines and, also, use shooting heads. Now, I cast these rods overhead but you can use modified spey casts as well.

I'm really not a fan of full length spey outfits or the lines used. Since they're so thick, they're more like ships hausers. So, you should post this question over on Blantons BB. There're far more surf guys over there. Check it out:

Good luck....
