When I first went to work at 'Sports Unlimited' on Arden Way in Sacramento in the 1960s my boss Lou Pia told me to merely answer the customer's questions and they will let you know when they want to buy something.

Well, that is what we do at Kiene's....

Don't be afraid to come into our shop to just look around and ask questions. We will not try to sell you anything...

We don't do the "Dale Carnegee" sales techneques at Kiene's.

We have a very good inventory and the most knowledgable staff on the west coast.

Most all my staff are better fly fishers and fly tiers than I am today. They are all veteran fly fishing "commandos".....

We also have a fly fishing travel agency at our shop, "Angling on the Fly" owned by Keith Kaneko. Our staff has hosted group trips for years all over the world so we can outfit people better than most.

We specialise in fly fishing for all species of fish....fresh and saltwater......"Blue Gills to Roosterfish"

This board is a good example....

Bill,
Without question you've got one of the finest shops around with people who really CARE about the customer's needs more than wants. I hate to even say this but not all shops think like this. Some only see dollars signs when certain customers walk in because they know this guy will buy anything they tell him too,,, whether he needs it or not.

One of my dearest old friends visits all of the shops on a regular basis almost weekly. Ol' (no name)*** is 86 years old, has dementia, and is bordering alzhiemers. He comes down to Sacramento to visit his "friends" at all of the shops, socialize a bit, and inevitably comes home with another new rod or Simms jackets or something else that he'll never be able to use. He's planning a baby tarpon trip soon so this shop sells him an 11 weight Hardy (just in case he runs into bigger fish). The following week he comes home with a new Hardy reel for this 11 weight because they told he "needed" it:( I chewed his butt out for letting these guys take advantage of him like this. He can't even cast a 8w. or 9w. for more than a few minutes without taking a rest. He won't even be able to lift that 11w. off the water let alone make a cast.

Shops like this cater to customer "wants" not to what they actually need. And when you start getting old, like we do, an honest salesman should care more about his customer's needs rather than making an easy buck.

I had to get that off my chest, Tony
