Kiene's manager Aaron Stiny and I are headed to the Mexican Yucatan to fish the famous Tarpon Cay Lodge which is 3 hours by van northwest of Cancun in the small fishing village of San Felipe. This remote destination is famous for baby Tarpon and adult Tarpon as well.

I was there last a few years ago with my good friend and veteran fly fisher Larry Cullens. You might recognise Larry from the movie "Rivers of a Lost Coast". Larry is one of those old north coast Steelheaders.

Here is a photo of Larry and I with a double on Tarpon. One day the water was very smooth and we ran into many large schools of Tarpon that were around 50 to almost 200 pounds.

Right off Larry hooked a fish that the guides later told us that they guessed at around 170 pounds. It jumped about 3-4 times and at about 200 yards out there it broke off.

Here is a photo of Larry with a Sheepshead or "Sheeper" as the guides call them. It probably doesn't seem like a big deal but they are almost harder to catch on a fly as a Permit. This one was tailing with a another one and Larry cast to them and caught this one just like fishing for Permit.

...off the hook, no pun intended. I went with Terry Thomas & friends about 5 years ago, and it was crazy! The first day out we ran into a big school of larger (30# - 100#) tarpon "porpoising" on the surface. My legs were shaking so bad I doubt I could have hit the ocean, if I had been able to make a cast - talk about "buck fever". I hooked a couple of larger poons, but never got a good stick. Have a great time! Brett

Summer is nearing and this place will be loaded with Tarpon of all sizes......

I like June/July/August there for low winds.
