Time to get into the two-handed sport.....

If you live anywhere near a larger trout stream or a nice wadable river you should be looking at a two-handed fly rod.

For trout you can swing soft-hackles/emergers or streamers with a light #4-6 line Switch rod.

Right now there are small spring run Steelhead and resident trout on the feed in many river in Nor Cal as the weather warms with this low water. Bugs are hatching now.....

We usually have Stripers in the Lower American River from April through September.

A larger Switch rod or Spey rod will allow you to throw fast sinking lines and Clouser minnows for Stripers while wading the river.

American Shad come in the Lower American River in April, May and June. It should be nice for wading with this years low water.

I love to swing with my Spey rod. Not only is casting a spey rod enjoyable, if you like the art/discipline of fly casting, but a spey rod is a very effective fishing tool. You can cast with more ease, you can cast farther and manage more line outside of the rod tip much better than a short single-handed rod. I like how I can control my swinging presentation so much better with my spey rod than I can with my single-handed rod.

IMO swinging in general is a very fun way to fish, add on top of that a fun way to cast and manage your line with a spey rod and there you have a winning combo. :)

Forgot to mention overhead casting two-handed fly rods for casting from the beach for various game fish in the salt water surf or in fresh water lakes.

This could be stripping for Stripers, Bluefish, Tarpon, Halibut, and Salmon.....

Some years ago I won a discount certificate at a TU banquet & picked up a 1409-5 at T&T which is a couple hours away. Trevor at T&T took me on a tour - what a hoot! I'd never been in a rod factory - saw boo being laid up, graphite mandrels, stacks & stacks of beautiful rods with Tom Dorsey in there - will never forget the experience.
