The H2o temp was 55 and I was dredging with my 350 g Sharkskin Express in about 35-40 feet of water. Count down and strip...pause........strip.........BANG!

WoW...55 degrees i would think those smallies should be moving out of that deep water onto to the spawning nests very soon.
Here's a technique i use on fishing for bass, and smallies in deep water or on the nests...use your sharkskin and 4ft. of leader with a floating flie or suspended hair popper, let the line sink to the bottom and craw the fly back to you. The floating fly will float about 3ft. off the bottom and not get hung up.

Have you tryed top water for the smallies??

Thx for the info.

I went out today on Lake Natoma, mainly for a shakedown on my newly motorized Scadden Renegade. WT was 54-56 deg and I was graphing fish in 9-15 feet, all on structure. Hooked two, lost both due to bad hook sets. I was dreading with a Clouser with some rubber legs tied on.

Here's the powered 'toon. Worked beautifully.
