Every year in January I head down to fish in San Diego Bay, and of course the one day I go down this year is the only day it rains. Oh well, you can't always have sunshine and bikinis in California. But the one thing you can be assure of is catching multiple species. This year I kicked around in my float tube and had a blast. Next year I hope to have a kayak to cover more water.

My next fishing boat, I'm not picky, I'll take either one

All fish were caught using a 7weight rod with T-14 line and size 2 clouser in reds, oranges, and tan colors. Launched at Glorietta Park which is really nice and free, plus there is a boat launch. I highly recommend this place to fish, I hope to go back this summer.

Hey Scott,.... Good job!! :D Looks like you had a good time. Did you fish with the crowd from FliFlicker :?: Seems like most of them fish from Kayaks while down there. Lots more mobility....

Hey Scott Looks Like You Had a Great Trip!!

Gets me excited for my trip in March.

Take Care,

ps: What does the T-14 equal in grains??

Say hey Jimmie,
It's 14 grains per foot x whatever length you feel comfortable with. Typically folks use 27 - 30 feet.

Scotty,
Nice going. One of my absolute favorite fisheries is SD & Mission Bay.

Cheers, K

I believe that living in Southern Cal would give you better saltwater fly fishing than we have up here in Nor Cal.

Excellent post Scott..............

Nice post and pictures....those big boats would make me nervous floating around in a float tube.

Nice report. I plan on dragging my sled down there for a week in July. I have NO experience fishing the bay so any advice would be greatly appreciated. If any one else from this board will be there in mid July let me know and we will "See What's Out There"

Darian, it was fliflickers annual fishout that I go to each year. I fished with about 5 others in float tubes. I look forward to next year.

I'll be going back down this summer, maybe I can plan it around the same time. I'll take some pics of the flies that we use down there. but for rods it is basically a 6 or 7 weight with T14 fished down near the bottom. In the eel grass areas they use an intermediate line. You fish the edges of any drop offs and channels and along the edge of any eel grass that you find. I can't help you with the bones, I have yet to catch one down their.

Great pictures and post, Scott. SD Bay is one of my favorites too. Mostly Sand Bass for me and I use a 6 wt. if there's no wind. I've had good luck on the sand bars with eel grass, but have never hooked anything bigger than what you're holding. I'd go down to a 4 wt next time for fishing the shallows.

A big plus is the Navy ships. You can't get as close as before 9/11 but it's cool to float around them.

I'd like to get a 13' Ocean Kayak too for that express purpose. Pretty hooked after watching the Kayak Fishing show every week. Probably not the best craft for fly fishing but handy for those salt bays.

How about Mission Bay? Is that worthwhile? Boated it, never fished it.

Aloha Scott, I heard they get some bonefish there sometimes, but in 60 feet of water. I fished La Jolla and the kelp beds. Got some barracuda, calicos and a nice yellow tail. I was amazed how much bait is there, funny how fish will still hit a quickly stripped clouser. Keep up the good work, Don.
